Buying a printer is longer an easy task due to the many different types, sizes, mechanisms and other specifications that printers can come with. In order to find the one that suits your needs and budget the best, you need to have a clear understanding of what is on the market. Some printers are known for the type of technology they utilize, i.e. the mechanics involved and/or according to its specifications. In this vein, monochrome printers form an integral part of the types of printers available, so continue reading below as monochrome printers are explained to help you better your knowledge of the choices you have available to you.

A monochrome printer is a considered a very simple device that is able to only print in black. In other words, monochrome printers cannot print in colour. This means that you won’t find a monochrome inkjet printer, because inkjet’s are always able to print in colour as part of their technological design. This means that typically the technology involved in monochrome printers is that of laser technology and direct thermal printing. These form the two main types of monochrome printers found on the market.

Laser printers involve the use of a drum and a toner. A laser light beam draws the desired image on the media in order to produce the finished printout. Direct thermal printing uses a different mechanism in that it does not incorporate ink. Direct thermal printing only uses a ribbon and makes use of direct heating in order to produce the desired result. Direct thermal printing is the technology used to print out receipts, labels and other such printouts.

There are a number of benefits that come from monochrome printers, as long as you don’t need to print in colour. The first of which, is that they are a cost-effective especially when it comes to running costs. With laser monochrome printers, toner is used very efficiently which also means that you don’t have to replace the cartridge as frequently with other types of printers. Similarly, the running costs of direct thermal printers is also low as its only the ribbon that requires replacing. Ribbons also have a high yield, which means they last for a relatively long time.

Due to the technology involved with monochrome printers they are ideal for printing memos and documents in black and white. For these reasons, businesses that mainly require monochrome printing invest in these types of printers for an all round cost-effective solution that produces excellent results.
